Finding Your Voice

Lessons from a Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk

Welcome to today's blog post, inspired by an unexpected visitor in my backyard—a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. (see video above) This encounter, while seemingly ordinary, sparked a reflection on the journey of finding and refining one’s voice, particularly relevant for conscious entrepreneurs and creators.

This summer, a pair of red-shouldered hawks raised their young nearby. Once fledged, the juvenile hawk began to explore, often perching in the trees of our backyard. Despite several missed opportunities, I finally captured footage of this magnificent bird. Reviewing footage I realized how much this young hawk had to teach us about growth and self-expression.

In the video, you'll notice the juvenile's calls—tentative and delicate, lacking the robust assertiveness of its parent's cries. This hesitancy isn't just characteristic of young birds but is a universal phase of growth. Like the hawk, we often start our journeys with a voice that is unsure and untested.

What stands out is the importance of practice.

The juvenile hawk’s calls may lack the confidence of its elders, but each attempt is a step towards mastery.

This is a powerful metaphor for anyone stepping into a new role or finding a new voice. Whether you’re launching a business, starting a new project, or stepping into a leadership role, your initial attempts might feel as shaky as a hawk’s first flights.

Finding your voice is akin to the first bloom of a flower—fragile, yet eager to show its brilliance. For entrepreneurs, this means speaking from the heart, even when your voice shakes. It’s about embracing vulnerability and allowing yourself to grow through practice and exposure.

It helps to have support, much like the unseen parent hawk (in the video), guiding and watching over the juvenile. In our lives, mentors, friends, and communities play this role, providing the encouragement and feedback necessary to refine our voices.

I encourage you to step out onto your own metaphorical limb.

Speak from your heart, share your unique message, and practice until your voice, though it may start tentative, echoes with the clarity and vibrance of your authentic self.

Finding the unique frequency of your voice is continuous and ever-evolving. Each stage of growth brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and adapt. Just like the juvenile hawk, your persistence will lead you to find the voice that resonates most authentically with who you are and what you aim to share with the world.

SO well said and I feel supported. Speaking from the heart regardless of fear is pivotal. I'm also trusting the path I am choosing and know I will be guided to the clients I may best serve and day I may best live. Brava again, Kathryn!
